CBSE still not ready for online exams: Former Chairman

In an interaction with ETV Bharat, Educationist and Former CBSE Chairman Ashok Ganguly said that it will take atleast 3-4 years for CBSE to conduct online exams as there are various complexities involved. Ganguly said that there is a need to start a holistic system of a comprehensive evaluation to deal with an unprecedented crisis.

Hyderabad: The lockdown induced by COVID-19 pandemic has prompted schools and colleges across the globe to move to the virtual world for teaching and learning activities but India still has a long way to go. Though online examinations for GRE and TOEFL have been conducted in view of the unprecedented crisis, Former CBSE Chairman Ashok Ganguly feels that CBSE is still not ready to go for online mode of examination.

In an exclusive interview with ETV Bharat, Ashok Ganguly said, "Our system is still not ready to conduct online examination due to the involvement of various variables. Lakhs of students are enrolled under CBSE and I think even schools are not ready to provide such service. It will take at least 3-4 years to make this happen. A system of comprehensive and regular evaluation should exist and if a pandemic occurs, marks of those records should be taken to allot scores to the students."

On a similar note, he added, "Conducting online examination in schools will be a tedious task due to lack of resources and network issues. There are a large number of schools and students enrolled. It is not an impossible task but it will take a few more years to conduct online exams in schools."

According to the latest notification issued by CBSE, results of class 10 and 12 students, who have completed all their exams, will be declared based on their performances. The results of Class 10th and 12th board examinations will be declared by July 15.

"For students who have appeared in the examinations in more than three subjects, the average of the marks obtained in the best three performing subjects will be awarded in the subjects whose examinations have not been conducted," it said.

Students who have appeared in the examinations in only three subjects, the average of the marks obtained in the best two performing subjects will be considered.
