New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 was against the constitution and culture of the country, saying if passed by the parliament, it would prove to be a "black law".
Talking to ETV Bharat here, senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi said what kind of the bill the government has brought in, if passed, he said every Muslim of the country would have to prove his/her nationality.
"Leader like Mahatma Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel would not have even thought that citizenship in India would ever be given on the basis of religion," he said, adding that it nothing but "vote bank politics".
"The people of the country are smart enough, they would not let them succeed," he said.
