CAA is against Tripura's indigenous people: JMACAA

Leaders protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Tripura have been camping in New Delhi for over a week now, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and urged him to keep Tripura out of the ambit of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

New Delhi:Leaders of Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) and Joint Movement against Citizenship Amendment Act (JMACAA) on Friday appealed Home Minister Amit Shah to keep Tripura out of the ambit of Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA).

On Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah met leaders of north-eastern states, including the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) ally the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), INPT and JMACAA over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

JMACAA is a joint forum of three tribal political parties National Council of Tripura (NCT), Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), Tipraland State Party (TSP) and several other social organizations like Borok People Human Rights Organisation (BPHRO) and Tribal Student Federation (TSF).

Both INPT and JMACAA delegation appraised him about the concern of the indeginious people of Tripura.

While speaking to ETV Bharat, JMACAA spokesperson Jagadish Debbarma said that this Act has posed as a serious threat to the culture and identity of the people of the state.

"If Government can keep Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and even Meghalaya out of the ambit of the Act, why not Tripura!" said Debbarma.

Debbarma, the general secretary of INPT said that they had been opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill ever since it was initiated in 2016.

He said that INPT will never accept CAA.

It may be mentioned here that both the parties have already observed road and rail blockade in Tripura in the recent past opposing the CAA.

Interestingly, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has welcomed CAA.
