Guwahati: Renowned surgeon Dr. Ilias Ali on Tuesday appealed to the COVID 19 survivors of Assam to donate their blood plasma which can be used to treat other patients who are battling the deadly virus.
Dr. Ali has been awarded Padma Shri for his contribution towards raising awareness about family planning and birth control measures particularly among the Muslim community of Assam.
Further, he informed that some hospitals in India have already been using plasma transfusion for treatment of COVID-19 positive cases. "I appeal to the COVID-19 survivors in Assam to donate their blood plasma so that more COVID-19 positive patients can be treated. The countries like the USA and China have used plasma transfusion to treat the COVID-19 positive cases and succeeded. We have 34 COVID-19 positive cases in Assam and five of them have been sent home after testing negative. These survivors should donate their blood plasma for treatment of other patients," he said.

He explained that the transfusion of plasma from the survivors to the COVID-19 positive will help form antibody which will help the infected person to fight against the deadly virus."The ICMR and Drug Controller of India have already given permission to some institutions in India for plasma transfusion. MAX hospital in Delhi had already explored this plasma transfusion and cured a coronavirus positive patient," he said.
The renowned surgeon also appealed to the Imams of the mosques in different parts of Assam to desist from organizing community Namaz during the Ramzan this year as it might lead to spread of the COVID-19 infection.
"We are facing a dangerous period. Imams can play a big role in making people aware. They must ensure that there is no mass gathering. They should avoid Tarabi Namaz and people should pray at home. as this will contribute to stopping the spread of coronavirus," he said.
