BJP leader arrested for sharing Mamata's morphed picture

West Bengal:Priyanka Sharma, a Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) youth wing convenor was arrested on Friday for sharing a morphed picture of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the social media.

In the meme shared by Sharma on May 9 on her Facebook timeline, TMC supremo's face was superimposed on actor Priyanka Chopra’s body, in the dress she wore to the 2019 Met gala.

"Priyanka Sharma has been arrested for sharing a morphed picture of the CM," said a police official.

The arrest was made after a complaint was lodged at Dasnagar Police station by Bivas Chandra Hazra, a TMC leader from Howrah district of West Bengal, accusing Sharma of "violating community guidelines".

Hazra also accused the BJP leader of "insulting the culture of Bengal".

Sharma has been remanded to 14-days judicial custody, according to the police.

In April 2012, Ambikesh Mahapatra, a chemistry professor at Jadavpur University, was arrested and later acquitted for circulating an email with a caricature of Banerjee.
