Panaji: The BJP, which is in power in Goa, made big gains in the Zilla panchayat elections, winning 32 out of the 49 seats on offer, while opposition Congress performed poorly, bagging just four.

The saffron party was able to repeat its winning feat a la Hyderabad, where also the BJP put up an impressive performance.

Goa chief minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that the party’s astounding victory is the acknowledgement from people for development works carried out in the state by BJP government. "The district Panchayati results were declared today in which BJP has completely outperformed the opposition," he added.

"It isn't the personal victory of any one BJP member, it's the party's efforts. We as a party take the wins and losses together in our stride. We learn from the results and introspect. But, Gomantak people have shown that we have passed the test of their trust. This is a sign of our robustness for assembly general elections scheduled in February 2022," Sawant said.

The CM also added that with the win will come increased funds and power which the right-wing party will use for the development of rural areas.

Expressing happiness over the historic win of BJP in Goa, the Pradesh party president Sadanand Tanavade said that this is the first time any party has won seats in such large numbers.

"Had the election taken place six months before, the issues in the campaign would have been different. This victory has been possible only due to BJP MLAs and ministers who took up the development works everywhere," Tanavade said.

He also took a jibe at the opposition saying the results are a slap on the face of the opposition who made several efforts to harass the government.

Meanwhile, the winning candidates were felicitated by Dr Sawant at Mahalakshmi residence.
