Big glory for JNU, says economist Sharad Kohli

Soon after the announcement of Indian origin Abhijit Banerjee winning the Noble Prize, economist Sharad Kohli spoke to ETV Bharat and said that the government must take some advice from the award winner in order to tackle the current situation of economic slowdown.

New Delhi:Hours after Indian origin Abhijit Banerjee was named as the winner for Nobel Economic Prize on Monday, renowned economist Sharad Kohli termed this achievement as 'very significant', especially at a time when the country is facing an economic slowdown.

"I believe Government of India will definitely approach Abhijit to tackle with the current situation of economic slowdown," said Kohli to ETV Bharat.

"This is a moment of pride not only for the West but for entire India...This is a moment of pride for JNU as well," said Kohli.

Banerjee studied in South Point High School. After his schooling, he took admission in the University of Calcutta's Presidency College, where he completed his B.A. degree in economics in 1981. Later, he completed his M.A. in economics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi in 1983.

Later, he went on to obtain a PhD in Economics at Harvard University in 1988. The subject of his doctoral thesis was "Essays in Information Economics".

Banerjee has also authored several books including Poor Economics, What the Economy Needs Now and Making Aid Work.
