Bhutanese currency used in villages of Assam

There are villages in Assam near Indo-Bhutan border area where instead of Indian Rupee, Ngultrum (the currency of Bhutan) is used for making transactions. Along with the currency, people from this region also use Bhutan's mobile network.

Charalapara (Assam):Around forty-two Indian villages in Assam dwelling near Indo-Bhutan border area use Ngultrum (the currency of Bhutan) instead of Indian currency for their day to day livelihood.

People of Charalapara, a backward area from Indo-Bhutan border around 45 km from Kokarajhar district, make transactions via Bhutanese currency although Ngultrum is not officially accepted in India.

When the country was going through the effects of demonetisation, people from these areas experienced no change.

Not only currency, but these people also use the mobile network from Bhutan as Modi's 'digital India' is yet to reach this region of Assam.

In the era of digitalisation, these people have also been struggling for proper road connectivity and access to clean drinking water.
