Aviation ministry caps airfares, one-third of domestic flights to resume initially

During the period of COVID- 19 pandemic, there will be no physical check-in at airports and airlines should adhere to lower, upper limits of fares prescribed by the government when domestic flights resume on Monday, informed Civil Aviation Ministry.

New Delhi: The Civil Aviation Ministry on Thursday said there will be no physical check-in at airports and airlines should adhere to lower, upper limits of fares prescribed by the government when domestic flights resume on Monday.

"Airlines should adhere to the lower and upper limits offers prescribed by the Ministry during the period of COVID- 19 pandemic," the civil aviation ministry said in its order dated May 21.

According to the Civil Aviation Ministry order, around one-third of total flights will be permitted on May 25 and the operations will be increased in a calibrated manner.

The ministry has advised vulnerable persons, including the elderly, pregnant women and passengers with health issues should avoid air travel.

The government has said that there will be no physical check-in at airports, and only those passengers with confirmed web check-in shall be allowed to enter the airport. There will be no meals onboard and cabin crew will need to be in full protective gear.

The aviation sector has been one of the worst-hit in the COVID-19 crisis. According to research firm ICRA, the Indian aviation industry may require funding of up to 35,000 crore till 2022-2023 as profitability will take a hit due to sharp fall in revenues and higher fixed costs during lockdown period, the credit rating agency.

All scheduled commercial passenger flights have been suspended in India since March 25, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed the lockdown to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
