Australian PM to call off India visit amid bushfire crisis; PM Modi extends support

Hours after Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison hinted at cancelling his visit to India, which was scheduled to take place in the month of January owing to the bushfire crisis ravaging parts of his country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Australian counterpart over the phone on Friday to extend his support.

New Delhi:With Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison mulling cancellation of his visit to India scheduled in the month of January owing to the bushfire crisis ravaging parts of his country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Australian counterpart over the phone on Friday to extend his support.

During the phone call, PM Modi expressed his dismay over the loss of life and property due to the bushfires and also offered India’s unstinted support to Australia and the Australian people, who are bravely facing this unprecedented natural calamity.

PM Modi also expressed his satisfaction at the progress made between the two countries in terms of their bilateral relations in recent years. He also reiterated India’s commitment to strengthen its strategic partnership with Australia.

He further stated that he looked forward to welcoming the Prime Minister of Australia at a mutually convenient time later in the year.

Bushfires have torn through rural communities across the Victoria region of Australia.

So far, at least 17 people have been killed and over 1,500 homes have been destroyed in the bushfire.

Prime Minister Morrison was scheduled to visit India for the Raisina dialogue on January 14-16.
