Assam:A man was killed and three others were injured on Friday after police allegedly opened fire at them as they tried to stop the cops from stealing their cows in South Salmara-Mankachar District of Assam.

One killed, 3 injured in alleged police firing as locals stop cops from stealing cows in an Assam village

While the deceased, identified as Nurjamal, died on the spot, three others - Dulal Hussain, Pashan Ali, and Alom - suffered serious injuries.

In the absence of proper healthcare facilities in the remote village and unavailability of an ambulance, the relatives of those injured along with the help of other local residents had to carry them on cots in the chilly winter morning until help arrived.

The locals have alleged that police personnel from Salmara police station accompanied by three-four other men dressed in plain clothes had barged into a cowshed at midnight and were trying to steal cows.

Alarmed by the noise, the villagers rushed to the cowshed thinking that cattle smugglers or thieves had entered the facility.

As the local residents confronted the alleged policemen, they were met with shots fired by them.

"Police personnel came to steal our cows and were accompanied by 3-4 men dressed in plain clothes. When we heard the noise we thought that a bunch of thieves have entered the cowshed. We went to the cowshed...police opened fire at us when we caught them. While some of them fired shots at us, some hurled bombs," said a local resident.

Meanwhile, the three injured men have been admitted to a district hospital in Dhubri.
