"We have appealed Rahul Gandhi to oppose the bill. And we are hopeful that Congeess and all the UPA alliances would come together to oppose the bill in the house," said Samujjal Bhattacharya, Advisor, NESO.

Members from NESO, KMSS and a group of intellectuals from Assam called on the Congress president separately and asked for his support.

"We have been assured by the Congress president that his party will oppose the bill in the Rajya Sabha," said Samual Jyrwa, President, NESO.

Although, the Citizenship amendment bill has not been included in the business list of the Rajya Sabha that will end on February 3, opposition parties have the presumption that the government can bring the bill in the discussion at the last moment.

The NESO met Trinamool Congress Leader Saugata Roy in the morning and appraised him of the situation. "We got positive response from the TMC too," said Bhattacharya.
