Jammu: An Army jawan, who was killed in the heavy shelling and firing by Pakistani troops along the LoC in Rajouri district, was cremated on Wednesday with full military honours at his native village.

The General Officer Commanding, Crossed Swords Division, Major General R Dewan, paid rich tributes to slain Naik Krishan Lal during a wreath-laying ceremony held at Akhnoor in the outskirts of the city, a defence spokesperson said.

He said the tricolour-wrapped coffin of the 34-year-old soldier was taken to his home Ghagriyal in Khour area of Akhnoor sector in a military vehicle.

The soldier is survived by his wife Shashi Devi and a minor son.

Naik Lal was killed as Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and resorted to firing and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Tuesday.

Thousands of people lined up on both sides of the road in his village to receive the body and chanted slogans in praise of his sacrifice for the nation.

Emotional scenes were witnessed during the last rites as his close relatives opened the coffin to have his last glimpse, with his brother Jagdish Lal, a retired soldier, expressing his desire to return to the armed forces to avenge his death.

The slain soldier's son, a class 4 student, presented a brave face and lit the pyre as the body of the deceased was consigned to flames with full military honours.
