Balrampur (Uttar Pradesh): Hours after the alleged 'forced cremation' of a 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was raped and murdered in Hathras, another similar incident was reported from Balrampur, wherein a 22-year-old girl was allegedly abducted, gang-raped and succumbed later.

Balrampur Superintendent of Police Dev Ranjan Verma said the incident happened in the Gaisari area of the district, where a 22-year-old Dalit woman, working in a private firm, failed to return home in time on Tuesday evening, prompting her parents to start looking for her.

The two accused have been arrested

The woman's parents said she did not respond to calls on her mobile phone, triggering panic among family members, the police said.

According to sources, the parents of the victim claimed that she had gone to college for getting admission when she was kidnapped by a few miscreants.

"She went to college for seeking admission. At around 7 pm, she came back home in a very bad condition and was unable to utter a word. She was suffering from severe stomach pain and we took her to the hospital," said the victim's mother.

She further claimed: "My daughter was kidnapped by three to four men and was taken to an isolated place. She was made unconscious and gang-raped. Her legs, waist were broken. After the brutal rape and torture, the miscreants sent her back home on an e-rickshaw."

"My daughter was pleading that she wanted to live, we took her to hospital but she could not survive the injuries," she added.

Two accused arrested

The woman returned home in an autorickshaw with an intravascular cannula, medically known as Vigo and used for administering injection, glucose or other fluids in the body, inserted in her hand, the police said.

Acting on the parent's complaint, police identified the accused as Shahid and Sahil and arrested them, the SP said.

Victim's postmortem, cremation conducted

Late in the evening, a panel of four doctors conducted the postmortem of the victim at the district hospital, following which the body was handed over to the family. The last rites of the victim were conducted at a cremation ground in the district amidst heavy police presence.

Contrary to the victim's mother's claims, Balrampur Superintendent of Police Dev Ranjan Verma said that it was not confirmed in the postmortem that the victim's back and legs were broken.

Opposition attacks government

Reacting to the incident, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav said, "After Hathras, now a daughter was harassed and gang-raped in Balrampur. The victim died in serious condition. Condolences!"
