AIMIM's good show in Bihar cause of worry for Congress

The AIMIM's good show in Bihar and the subsequent announcement by Asaduddin Owaisi that the party would contest the upcoming polls in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, will be a cause of concern for the Congress, as it would need to ensure that the AIMIM does not indirectly end up helping the BJP by "cutting votes".

New Delhi: Though the Bihar Assembly election was a straight-up fight between the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, several smaller parties played a crucial role in how the results panned out.

By contesting in multiple seats, parties like AIMIM, BSP, and RLSP have seemingly emerged as vote-cutters.

However, among all such parties, it was Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM which hurt the Mahagathbandhan the most.

According to political experts, Owaisi's party successfully disturbed the RJD'S M-Y equation on which it heavily relied.

The AIMIM contested on a total of 20 seats in Bihar, and emerged victorious on five seats -- the party's best performance in the state so far.

Though the AIMIM's vote share was just 1.24 per cent, it was more than enough to spoil the party of the Mahagathbandhan.

However, what would worry the Congress the most is Asaduddin Owaisi's presser after the Bihar results, where he made it clear that his party would contest the upcoming state polls in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

The Congress would be worried that such a scenario, where the AIMIM's good show indirectly helped the ruling NDA, does not repeat itself in other states.
