AASU to approach SC seeking correction in Final NRC

New Delhi:The influential All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has decided to approach the Supreme Court seeking correction in the final National Register of Citizen (NRC) list on Wednesday.

Days after the publication of final NRC which found more than 19 lakh people ineligible, the AASU has decided to approach to the apex court alleging gross anomalies in the entire NRC process.

The student body has alleged that the numbers of such people excluded from the final NRC list "should be more."

Echoing the same view, All Assamese Students' Association in New Delhi said that the final NRC list has severe anomalies.

"We were expecting a clean NRC, but there are anomalies in the final lists. So we are in support of AASU's decision to approach the Supreme Court," said Subhrajyoti Duarah, president of All Assamese Students' Association.

Substantiating Duarah's claim, the Association general secretary Mrigen Jyoti Kashyap said that the number of non-eligible people should be more.

Quoting former State Home Minister Kiren Rijiju, Kashyap said, "The former State Home minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier said that there were 41 lakh illegal foreigners, so where the remaining 21 lakhs have gone?"

The final NRC list that was published in Assam on August 31 had generated mixed reactions. In fact, BJP leaders themselves have raised questions over the NRC process.

Assam Minister Hemanta Biswa Sharma has commented that there should be something more concrete to detect illegal foreigners.
