8,189 Indian prisoners lodged in foreign jails: MEA

Saudi Arabia has the highest 1,811 Indian prisoners, followed by the UAE with 1,392 and Nepal 1,160 Indian in its jails, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan informed the Lok Sabha.

New Delhi: Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs V Muraleedharan on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that a total number of 8189 Indians are languishing in foreign jails.

According to offcial data on Indians languishing in foreign jails, Saudi Arabia leads with nearly 1,811 Indians in their prisons.

Another middle-east country UAE, which is home to nearly 3.3 million Indians, is at the second position with 1392 nationals in their prisons. The UAE is followed by neighbouring Nepal with 1160 Indians in its jails.

All three countries with the maximum number of Indian nationals as their prisoners haven't provided gender-based data of the Indians.

"...due to strong privacy laws prevailing in many countries, local authorities do not share information on prisoners unless the person concerned consents to the disclosure of such information," the minister told the house.

Muraleedharan said since May 2014, total 6,405 Indians have either been pardoned or their sentences have been reduced by foreign governments.

He also mentioned that from 2010 to 2019, total 59 prisoners have been repatriated to India.
