19 Indian cities see surge in crime rate: NCRB

The recent crime data revealed by the National Crime Records Bureau reveals that there has been a significant rise in crimes in India's metropolitan cities with Uttar Pradesh recording the highest number of murder cases.

New Delhi: India's 19 metropolitan cities have witnessed an increase of 7.3 per cent crime in 2019 in comparison to the previous year-2018, said a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. Cities like Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Coimbatore are the top five cities across India that have registered maximum crime incidents of both IPC and SLL category with 311092, 71949, 53538, 41854 and 15821 respectively.

A total of 8,60,960 cognizable crimes comprising 6,04,897 Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes and 2,56,063 special and local laws (SLS) crimes were registered in 19 metropolitan cities during 2019 against a total case of 8,02,267 cases in 2018.

Cities like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune and Surat registered an increase of 10.9 per cent IPC crime in 2019 in comparison to 2018. However, SLL crimes registered have decreased marginally by 0.3 per cent over 2018.

Under IPC crime, the majority of cases were registered under theft accounting for 51.0 per cent (3,08,360 out of 6,04,897 cases), followed by rash driving with 9.5 per cent (57,303 cases).


Under SLL crimes, majority of cases were registered under Prohibition Act accounting for 27.7 per cent (70,982 out of 2,56,063 cases) followed by city/town police acts accounting for 19.5 per cent (49,990 cases) and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act accounting for 7.9 per cent (20,208 cases) during 2019.

A total of 2,022 cases of murder were registered during 2019, showing an increase of 4.3 per cent over 2018 (1939 cases).

The NCRB report said that a total of 93,265 cases of offences affecting the human body were registered which accounted for 15.4 per cent of total IPC crimes in 19 metropolitan cities during 2019.

"Out of these cases hurt (48,771 cases), accounted for maximum cases with 52.3 per cent followed by cases of kidnapping and abduction (14,877 cases, 16.0 percent) and cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty (9,206 cases, 9.9 percent)," the NCRB report said.

It said that during 2019, a total of 15,256 kidnapped or abducted persons (5432 male and 9824 female) were recovered put of which 15,200 persons were recovered alive and 56 were found dead.

Ironically, Uttar Pradesh registered maximum number of murder cases with 3806 followed by Bihar 3138, Maharastra 2142, Madhya Pradesh 1795 and Jharkhand 1626.
