Assam records over 18,000 rape cases in last 5 years

Despite the BJP government's much-hyped "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" campaign, startling figures reveal that over 18,000 children, women and young girls have been raped in Assam since 2016.

Guwahati: Despite the assurances from the government, atrocities against women and girls continue in Assam.

Statistics have revealed that 18,693 children, women and young girls have been raped in Assam in the last five years. Statistics of the state home department, which were submitted in the Assam legislative assembly recently, revealed this startling fact. According to the figures, 18,693 children, women and young girls have been raped in Assam in 1,825 days.

The revelation is shocking considering the fact that the BJP governments at the Centre and the state have been promoting empowerment of girls and women through the much-hyped "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" campaign.

The statistics further releaved that between 2016 and July this year, 7,607 cases of child rape have been registered. Out of this police, have charge sheeted 6,249 accused. Apart from this, 11,086 cases of rape against young girls and women have been registered during this period. Police have filed charge sheets against 9198 accused related to 8,020 such crimes.

The statistics further revealed that highest cases of child rape happened in 2018-19. While 1,721 cases of child rape were registered in 2018, 1,779 such cases have been registered in 2019.
