New Delhi: Rajasthan government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that self-styled Godman, Asaram Bapu, wants suspension in his life sentence under the 'garb of his medical treatment' and there is no need for special treatment or shifting as per his medical reports. Back in 2014 and 2016, he had approached the court seeking bail on medical grounds but his pleas were dismissed each time as the medical team constituted to examine his health always opined that he does not need any special treatment and can be treated through routine OPD.

This is the third time that the petitioner, accused of rape, has approached the top court seeking bail and ayurvedic treatment for himself. His medical reports of May 2021 shows that he was not co-operative with the doctors at AIIMS in Jodhpur and refused to take medicines prescribed by them. He was discharged from there in three days as there was no complication or need for special treatment found. "The accused/petitioner with ulterior motive has been attempting to change the venue of his custody, under the guise of medical treatment. Such change is an abuse of the process of law. The accused deliberately delayed the trial at Gandhi Nagar and Jodhpur, malafidely, raising such pleas, whereas he is stable and fit," said the Rajasthan government.

Rajasthan government has also cited that Asaram's Ayurvedic doctor's report says he needs to be treated under the proper guidance of a cardiologist, neurologist, endocrinologist, urologist, orthopaedic consultant and experienced Ayurvedacharya etc. "Such opinion itself suggests that the accused must be treated at a place under the committee of allopathic specialists and Ayurvedacharya. This specific requirement of the committee is available at Jodhpur, wherein, AIIMS Jodhpur and Ayurveda University Hospital are situated and are capable to treat accuse/patient effectively," contended the state. Asaram has been directed by the top court to file a rejoinder to the Rajasthan government's affidavit opposing his bail and will hear the case on Friday.
