New Delhi:Following Navjot Singh Sidhu's decision to quit as the chief of Punjab Congress Committee, the state government led by newly inducted Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is convening an emergency cabinet meeting, which began at around 11.10 am, sources confirmed.

The emergency meeting has been called as hectic parleys among some cabinet ministers at the chief minister's residence until late into the night could not yield desired results. Sources said the ministers did not arrive at a consensus and hence the emergency meeting today became unavoidable.

"Discussions with Chief Minister S. Charanjit Singh Channi again continue late into the night at our residence in Chandigarh," Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal tweeted.

Congress in charge for Punjab, Harish Rawat, will fly to Punjab from New Delhi today in a bid to resolve the crisis. He is likely to meet Sidhu and convince him to take back his resignation. Details about their meeting could not be obtained.

Tweeting his resignation letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu had on Tuesday written, "The collapse of a man's character stems from the compromise corner, I can never compromise on Punjab's future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab. Therefore, I hereby resign as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress."

The high command turning down Sidhu's request to elevate him to the chief minister's post, his inability to get the IPS officer of his liking as the state's police chief, his apparent disappointment over the appointment of the Advocate General and the allocation of departments to certain ministers against his liking are seen as the prominent reasons behind Sidhu's decision to step down as the PCC chief, just over two months after he assumed the role.
