AIUDF chief Ajmal faces heat for insulting 'gamusa'

Gamusa is a white rectangular piece of cloth with a red border worn over the shoulder. It is identified with the culture of the indigenous people of the Assam. In a video AIDUF leader Ajmal was seen throwing the 'gamusa' in anger, which sparked an outrage.

Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal faced severe criticism from the people of Assam for insulting 'Gamusa' (a piece of cloth).

The AIUDF chief, who is contesting elections in alliance with Congress, was seen throwing Gamusa in anger while addressing an election rally in Barpeta district. Gamusa is a white piece of cloth with a red border and worn over the shoulder. It is identified with the culture of the indigenous people of Assam.

In the video, Ajmal can be seen throwing away the gamusa in a heavy rush in an agitated mood claiming that the felicitation process is a 'waste of time'. However, sources claimed that the leader was upset assuming that he won't be able to attend the election rally due to a technical snag in his chopper owing to bad weather conditions.

However, the people of Assam have reacted sharply to the incident. Earlier, Ajmal was criticized several times by the public for allegedly insulting the pride and identity of Assam.

Voting is underway for 39 seats in the second phase of assembly elections in Assam amid tight security. The fate of 345 candidates, including 26 women, is being decided by over 73.44 lakh voters in this phase.

Among those contesting the elections in this phase are five ministers and the deputy speaker of the outgoing House.

Polling will continue till 6 pm as the duration has been extended by an hour to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
