Ahead of Putin's visit, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov to arrive in Delhi on Sunday

Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit India on Sunday, ahead of President Putin's visit to the country on December 6. Lavrov will be meeting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and taking part in the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between India and Russia.

New Delhi: Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov is arriving in New Delhi on Sunday ahead of Russian President Putin's visit which is scheduled for December 6, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday.

"During his two-day visit, he will meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and take part in the 2 +2 Ministerial Dialogue between India and Russia," the Ministry said.

According to the ministry, agreements related to trade, energy, culture, the defence will be signed between the two nations.

Earlier, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, " As we announced last week, the visit of Russian President His Excellency Vladimir Putin will take place on 6th December. He will be here for the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit".

Putin will also meet Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad house here in the national capital.

Bagchi said that there will be a series of meetings on that day.

"We foresee a very intensive engagement during the day and culminating with the summit. The day will begin with Raksha Mantri and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Shoygu, co-chairing what is known as the Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation, in the morning", Bagchi informed.

While External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar will have a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, he said.

These meetings will be followed by the first meeting, the inaugural meeting of the newly instituted 2 + 2 dialogue mechanism at the level of the foreign and defence ministers.

Both ministers are expected to discuss bilateral, regional and international political and defence issues within this format, as you know, we have very few countries, Bagchi said.

On the afternoon of Dec 6, the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit will be held and New Delhi looks forward to welcoming President Putin for the summit.

The leaders will review the state and prospects of bilateral relations and discuss ways to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The summit as said by Bagchi will offer an opportunity to exchange views on regional, multilateral and international issues of mutual interest.

A joint statement is proposed to be issued at the end of the summit, which will encapsulate the discussions, understandings and agreements signed during and also in the run-up to the summit.

The last India-Russia Annual Summit was held in September 2019 during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Vladivostok (Russia).

The Annual Summit could not take place in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.
