Three men have been arrested in connection with the Wednesday morning acid attack on a 17-year-old girl in west Delhi. They are currently being interrogated to ascertain the motive behind the attack. The victim is being treated for serious burn injuries to her face at Safdarjung hospital. Her condition is stable.

New Delhi:A 17-year-old girl became a fresh victim of an acid attack in the national capital on Wednesday. Two bike-borne youths flung acid on the teenage girl while she was on her way to school with her younger sister in the Uttam Nagar area of Delhi's Dwarka district at around 7:30 am, police said.

The girl was referred to Safdarjung Hospital's burn ICU unit where she is battling burn injuries, especially to her eyes and face, though doctors say her condition is stable. The incident triggered massive outrage from both political and social circles.

  1. Police have arrested three men in connection with the acid attack. They are currently being interrogated to ascertain the motive behind the attack. The victim has identified two of them.
  2. Recapping the events of the morning, the victim's uncle said she was walking towards the metro station with her sister when she was attacked. The pain must have been excruciating and she ran towards nearby shops for help. One shopkeeper poured milk on her face to alleviate the agony, he said.
  3. After her younger sister rushed home and narrated the incident, the victim's father rushed his daughter to a nearby hospital, from where she was referred to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and subsequently to the centre-run Safdarjung Hospital.
  4. The local police were informed at around 9 am about the attack which unfolded in Mohan Garden police limits in full public view. The attack episode was caught on the CCTV cameras installed in the locality. The video has trickled out to social media platforms and is doing rounds.
  5. The visuals show the two girls walking by the roadside when a bike slows down and one of them throws a liquid substance from a glass at the 17-year-old. She is then seen holding her face and running, clearly in extreme pain.
  6. Delhi L-G V K Saxena spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora on the matter and sought a detailed report into the incident, including as to how the acid used was procured despite a ban in the city.
  7. As outrage spread over the acid attack, women's groups and others raised questions about the availability of acid in markets. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked how the accused could have gathered so much courage.
  8. The National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights sought urgent action from authorities in the acid attack. The NCW has also taken up the matter with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority for compensation to the victim.
  9. Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal said that the chemical despite the ban is as easily available as vegetables. In a video uploaded on Twitter, Maliwal said that the body may approach the court for stricter enforcement of the ban on the over-the-counter sale of acid.
  10. Acid attack survivor and activist Laxmi Agarwal said she will extend all possible assistance to the 17-year-old girl who was attacked with acid in west Delhi and urged authorities to strictly implement the ban on the corrosive substance.
