Tumakuru road accident: Karnataka CM announced Rs 5 lakh compensation

Karnataka CM announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for 9 people who were killed in a road accident near Kalambella here early Thursday morning, police sources said.

Tumakuru: Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommayi has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for each family of those who died in the accident near Shira in Tumkur. Speaking to the media today at Vidhansouda, he said, .'This is unfortunate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his tributes. 9 people died in the accident. They said that they will give five lakh compensation to the families of the deceased.

As many as nine persons died and 12 were injured in a road accident in the Shira taluka of Tumakuru district of Karnataka late on Wednesday night. The incident took place when a lorry and a cruiser collided near the Balenahalli gate area, police said.

Police sources said that out of those injured four are in critical condition and have been admitted to a government hospital in the district. They further revealed that about 20 passengers were in the cruiser at the time of the accident.

"The cruiser jeep was carrying daily wage workers who were moving towards Bengaluru city in search of work," said Superintended Police Rahul Shahpurwad after visiting the spot. All the deceased are said to be from the Raichur district. A case has been registered at the Kallembella police station.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. "The accident in Tumakuru district, Karnataka is heart-rending. Condolences to the bereaved families. Prayers with the injured. Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be paid to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be paid Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi," the PMO stated in a tweet.
