Punjab elections 2022 to be fought under Capt's leadership: Harish Rawat

Amid the political turmoil in the Punjab Congress, leaders from the Navjot Singh Sidhu camp on Wednesday met Punjab AICC Incharge Harish Rawat in Dehradun. Rawat having met the disgruntled leaders assured them that he would resolve the ongoing tussle of Punjab Congress.

Chandigarh:In a big relief to Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, senior Congress leader and Punjab AICC in-charge Harish Rawat said the crisis in the party is an "internal party matter and it will be resolved soon. We will fight the coming elections under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh. There is not going to be any change."

Earlier, four cabinet ministers and around 32 Congress MLAs having raised a banner of revolt against the Punjab CM. They have announced that they have no faith in Captain Amarinder Singh as far as fulfilling the election promises is concerned. Speaking to the media Rawat said, "We will fight the coming elections under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh. There is not going to be any change. Navjot Singh Sidhu's entry is totally a different issue and it may take some time for him to understand. Be it, Sidhu or Harish Rawat, Amarinder Singh or Bajwa, all these people are old soldiers of the Congress. Therefore, there is no crisis of any kind in the Punjab government. I will talk to the MLAs and ministers and make the high command aware of the whole issue."

The new development, especially after resolving the recent political crisis in Punjab Congress after the intervention of the Congress High Command in Delhi, indicates the tussle between Sidhu and Captain is far from over.

Four cabinet ministers — Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, and MLA Pargat Singh — have decided to meet the Congress high command demanding Navjot Singh Sidhu's appointment as CM candidate for the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the state.

On Tuesday, Congress lawmaker Surjit Singh Dhiman said that Captain Amarinder Singh "should now leave and Navjot Singh Sidhu should be appointed as the CM of Punjab." He also added that if the party contests the 2022 Assembly election under Captain Amarinder Singh, then he will not take part in the upcoming election.

Amarinder Singh, on Sunday, had criticised Sidhu's advisors for their absurd comments on sensitive issues related to Kashmir and Pakistan, adding that such remarks would hurt India's interest and that it is contrary to Congress' position on the issue. In a statement, he warned against "objectionable and absurd remarks that are potentially dangerous to the peace and stability of the state and the country."
