4.1 magnitude earthquake hits Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand

An earthquake of 4.1 magnitude struck Pithoragarh district post-midnight at 12.39 am on Thursday but no damage has been reported. Uttarakhand is reported to be highly sensitive to earthquakes.

Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand): An earthquake of 4.1 magnitude has once again struck Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, post-midnight at 12.39 am on Thursday, District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Mahar said.

He also stated that the depth of the earthquake ranged up to 10 km in Askot area of ​​Didihat which is reported to be the centre of the quake.

Mild tremors were felt in Munsiyari and Dharchula including district headquarters as well as in some parts of Nepal.

People quit homes and came on the streets during the quake.

"No damage has been reported so far as the earthquake was of mild intensity," Mahar said.

To be noted, Pithoragarh district, located on the China and Nepal border, falls under zone five from the point of view of the earthquake. The district has witnessed a minimum of 3 earthquakes this year.

Earlier on December 5, tremors struck Uttarkashi and Tehri districts at a magnitude of 3.8 in the late night.

Similarly, on September 24, an earthquake shook Pithoragarh district at a magnitude of 3.8.

The state of Uttrakhand is reported to be much prone to earthquakes.
