16 Kashmiri PSA detenues shifted to Haryana jails

In view of decongesting the Central Jail Srinagar, the oldest jail in the union territory, the Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered shifting 16 detenues, to two jails in Haryana.

Srinagar:In view of decongesting the Central Jail Srinagar, the oldest jail in the union territory, the Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered shifting 16 detenues, to two jails in Haryana.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under Section 10 (b) of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, the government hereby directs to remove / shift the below mentioned detenues who have been detained under the provisions of Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, from their present places of lodgment to the jails of Haryana state,” the government order read.

The government said that the move has been taken to decongest the Central Jail Srinagar, where 660 convicts and undertrials are being imprisoned. The jail is designed to house only 440 inmates. As per the order, eight detenues will be shifted to the district jail in Karnal while another eight 8 detenues will be shifted to Jhajjar district jail, both in Haryana.
