10 militant associates arrested in J&K's Uri Sector

Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested ten terror associates and recovered arms and ammunition in Uri, Baramulla on Saturday. Police have recovered two pistols, ten grenades, ten bullet magazines, Rs 21 lakh cash, and drugs from their possession.

Srinagar:Police and CRPF have claimed to have jointly arrested 10 associates of the militant outfit along with ammunition and arms from the Uri sector of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Police sources said that they have arrested 10 overground workers (OGWs) and recovered two pistols, ten grenades, ten bullet magazines, Rs 21 lakh cash, and drugs from their possession.

Three out of ten were identified as Sharafat Khan son of Badshah Khan (Kupwara), Sajjad Shah son of Mohammad Shah (Lolab), and Shahid Ahmed Rather son of Wali Mohammad Rather (Tangmarg). Police have registered a case at the Uri police station and launched further investigations.

Earlier on June 16, one unidentified terrorist was neutralised in an encounter between security forces and terrorists at Wagoora in Naugam area of Srinagar.

Uri: History of the deadliest attack

On 18 September 2016 at least four terrorists attacked an Indian Army brigade headquarters in Uri. As a rear administrative base camp with tents caught fire, 17 army personnel were killed during the attack and 19-30 soldiers were reported to have been injured in the incident. According to the reports, a gun battle ensued lasting six hours, during which all the four militants were killed. It was reported as "the deadliest attack on security forces in Kashmir in two decades".
