Women Open Fires at Wedding, Later Posts Video on Social Media; Police Launch Probe Kanpur:A woman reportedly fired five rounds of bullet in the air in a domestic ceremony in the Barra locality of Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur. The incident came to light after the video of the celebratory firing was widely shared in the messaging platforms.
A team of Kanpur police reached the spot and initiated a probe. Deputy Commissioner of Police South Zone Ravindra Kumar on Friday said cognizance has been taken of the video and police are probing the matter.
It is understood that the incident took place on Wednesday February 14 at a wedding ceremony, which was held at a guest house under the jurisdiction of Rail Bazar Police Station. The video showed the woman being helped by a man who is seen helping her to stabilise the hand pistol.
It is unclear yet whether the pistol used for the celebratory firing has been a licensed one or not, or whom it belongs to. Celebratory gunfire is the shooting of a firearm into the air in celebration.
The Supreme Court, earlier in 2020, has ruled that guns licensed for self protection cannot be used for celebratory firing, while sentencing a man accused of killing two persons in a celebratory firing to ten years rigorous imprisonment, expressing its concerns about the rising incidents of celebratory firing.
The bench led by the then Chief Justice SA Bobde said that incidents of celebratory firing are regretfully rising, “for they are seen as a status symbol”.
“A gun licensed for self protection or safety and security of crops and cattle cannot be fired in celebratory events, it being a potential cause of fatal accidents,” the bench said adding that such misuse of firearms convert a happy event to a pall of gloom.
Earlier, on February 11, a five-year-old was killed in Uttar Pradesh during a celebratory firing. The incident took place in the Mataundh area of the Banda district.
