Kolkata:Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday raised concerns over safety of women in West Bengal and asserted that the BJP will form the government with two-third majority in 2026.

He claimed incidents of assault in Sandeshkhali and RG Kar are enough evidence that women are unsafe in the State.

Addressing a gathering in the city this afternoon, Shah said, "Our mothers and sisters are not safe in Bengal," he said while calling for action to ensure women's safety and security.

Sandeshkhali, a village in Bengal's North 24 Parganas district had witnessed protests over allegations of women being sexually abused by a local TMC leader. Again, nationwide protests have erupted following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Launching BJP's membership drive in Bengal, Shah set a target of enrolling one crore members here. He called for a joint effort to ensure BJP forms the government in Bengal in 2026 state elections with a two-third majority. He said that it is by bringing BJP to power that issues of corruption and infiltration can be tackled.

Shah further said that West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was happy when BJP's seat count decreased after the Lok Sabha polls and asserted that the saffron party will come to power in 2026. "Mamata didi should not think we are sitting idle as we got few seats in Bengal", he said.

While BJP had targeted 30 seats in Bengal, it could secure only 12 seats, which is six lesser compared to 2019. After the Lok Sabha elections, this is the Union Home Minister's first visit to West Bengal.
