Kanyakumari: In a shocking incident of suicide reported from Tamil Nadu, a 24-year-old newlywed woman ended her life six months after her marriage after being allegedly harassed by her mother-in-law for dowry in Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari. Fearing her arrest, the accused mother-in-law too attempted suicide and has been admitted to the hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Shruthi, wife of Karthik, 25, a resident of Suchindram South Mud area of Kanyakumari district. Karthik and Shruthi got married on March 21, 2024.
Victim's Whatsapp Message To Parents About 'Harrasment' By Mother-in-law'
Babu, Shruthi's father said that two days ago, they received a Whatsapp message from Shruthi, who told them that her mother-in-law Senpakavalli (48) was harassing her for dowry and were threatening to drive her away from the house.
“Seeing the text, we kept calling on the way, but no one picked up. Later, we came to know that Shruthi had ended her life. We should get justice for our daughter's death," Babu said. Police have shifted the body to Asaripallam Government Hospital next to Nagercoil for post-mortem.
Victim's Audio Message To Parents Goes Viral
The audio message that Shruthi sent to her mother via WhatsApp before the alleged suicide is going viral on social media. "My husband is good. But his mother is very cruel to me. She scolds me for being with my husband. Even if I am near him, even if I eat food with him, she does not like it," Shruthi is heard telling her mother in the purported audio note.
"She is forcing me not to live with my husband and to leave the house. But, I can't stay at home like this".
In the purported audio, Shruthi is also heard asking her parents to get all her jewelry back from her in-laws and take good care of her sister. "After mydeath the body should not be given to my husband to perform any ritual in the household culture. They don't need culture. Take me to our house," Shruthi tells her parents fervently.
Shruthi's father, Babu, who works as state electrical supervisor, said that at the time of his daughter's marriage, he spent lavishly in gifting jewelry and other gifts as dowry to her in-laws besides Rs 5 lakh in cash. However, the in-laws still kept harassing her for more dowry, the victim's father alleged.
Mother-in-law's Suicide Attempt Fearing Arrest
According to neighbours, the victim's mother-in-law Senpakavalli (48) attempted suicide on Wednesday afternoon at her house while fearing arrest in the death of her daughter-in-law. Senpakavalli was rescued and shifted to Asaripalayam Government Medical College Hospital where she is undergoing treatment.
