Pune: A massive fire at the Madnai metro station here was thwarted by the deft fire brigade personnel from a fire station. It took just five minutes for the five fire tenders to douse the inferno. This was possible due to the use of non-breathing firefighting equipment. No causality has been reported and one firefighter sustained minor injury during the operation.

Prima facie it looks like the welding work led to the ignition. The work of the metro station at Mandai has not been completed yet. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Gill said while the welding work was going on in the basement, a large amount of smoke might have caused the fire.

NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule lashed out at the Maharashtra government over the incident. In a post on X, Supriya said, "A fire broke out at the recently inaugurated 'Mahatma Jotiba Phule Metro Station' of Mandai. Fortunately, the firemen promptly brought the fire under control and prevented any loss of life."

"First of all, thank you very much for this. There is still a lot of work to be done on this metro line. Specific time should be given for each work, but this incident has highlighted that the rush to complete inaugurations in the run-up to elections can cost the lives of passengers. In this incident, the metro station has suffered a lot of damage and the expenditure incurred for this has been wasted. There is a need to investigate this burning case," added Supriya, daughter of NCP (SP) supremo and former Union Minister Sharad Pawar.
