New Delhi:The bills related to 'one nation one election' will be introduced in the Lok Sabha after the completion of financial business, sources said on Sunday.

Earlier, the two bills -- The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill) - were listed for introduction in the Lok Sabha on Monday (Dec 14, 2024).

The sources in the government said the the bills could be brought later this week after the House passes the first batch of supplementary demands for grants listed for Monday.

The revised list of business, issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat, does not have the two bills on the agenda for Monday. However, the government can always bring in legislative agenda to Parliament at the last minute through 'Supplementary List of Business' with the permission of the Lok Sabha Speaker.

The two bills related to the implementation of the simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and state assemblies were circulated among members last week as per the rules of procedure. The Winter session of Parliament is scheduled to conclude on December 20.

Earlier on Dec 12, the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the draft legislations on simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls.

Holding simultaneous polls was a key poll plank of BJP and the bills are a major step in achieving the same. While the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Amendment) Bill 2024 pertains to synchronising elections to state assemblies with that of the Lok Sabha, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024 seeks to align assembly elections in the Union territories of Jammu & Kashmir and New Delhi along with the Lok Sabha and assembly elections in states.
