Kolkata: The City of Joy woke up to a shocker on Wednesday morning when the bodies of three persons from the same family were recovered from a flat in Tangra on the eastern fringe of Kolkata. The deceased include two women and a minor girl.

Commissioner Manoj Verma said the women have been identified as Romi Deyt (44), Sudeshna Dey (39) and Priyamvada Dey (14). There were wounds from sharp weapons on the neck, chest and limbs of the women and all three had their wrists slit. Romi and Sudeshna’s lips had deep wounds.

Sources in Lalbazar, the headquarters of Kolkata Police, said the bodies were found in a flat on 21/C Atul Sur Road in Tangra by the locals who reported it to the police who reached the spot and collected the bodies. A mobile phone has been found on the spot.

CP Verma, Joint CP (Crime) Rupesh Kumar and other senior officials reached the spot. The forensic team was also called in. Meanwhile, three of the same family met with an accident on the same day near Abhishikta Crossing on the EM Bypass. All have been admitted to a private hospital nearby.

After questioning, police said the two incidents were related and the injured have been identified as Prasun Dey, Pranay Dey and a minor boy, Pratip Dey, son of Pranay. Prasun and Pranay are brothers and are the husbands of Romi and Sudeshna, respectively.

In the preliminary investigation, police came to know the family members had a sweet dish at the dinner on Tuesday after which the wrists of the victims were slit. The reason for their death will be revealed by the arrival of the autopsy report.

"We have spoken to Prasun and Pranay and their statements have been recorded and videographed," Kumar said.

Sources said the Dey family was into the leather business and it was not running well for some time leading to mounting debts. On Tuesday night, a creditor called Manoj came to the flat to meet them.

Manoj told the police that he knew the Deys from 2020 in terms of business and they supplied leather to him till 2023. The Deys still owe a bigger sum to him and paid off 70 per cent of the debt in July 2024. He went for the remaining amount but didn’t get any response from inside the flat.

Initially, it is believed that the debt-ridden family members tried to end their lives but other angles are being looked into.

"We are looking into every angle which can be a business enmity or a family feud. We also have got some additional information which can’t be revealed at this moment," Verma said.
