Srinagar: An unidentified militant was killed while another is believed to be trapped after a gunfight broke out between the security forces and militants in Ketsun forest area in north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Tuesday.
Sources said that the encounter broke out in the Ketsun woods after the security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area following inputs about the presence of militants in the area.
While there was no word by the police yet, reliable sources told ETV Bharat that a militant had been killed in the encounter while another is still trapped at the encounter site. The identity of the slain or the trapped militant was not immediately known.
Tuesday's is the third encounter in the last four days in Kashmir valley, which has witnessed a spurt in the militancy related incidents since the Omar Abdullah led NC-Congress coalition government took oath as the first government in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in the backdrop of Article 370.
On November 2, security forces claimed to have killed three militants including two local residents and one Pakistani militant identified as Usman Bhai in two separate encounters in south Kashmir's Anantnag and Khanyar area of downtown Srinagar. In the Khanyar encounter, four security forces personnel were also injured in the exchange of fire.
