STORYLINE:
Native American activists are preparing to mark the 50th anniversary of their occupation of Alcatraz island.
The 19-month occupation began on November 20, 1969, as dozens of activists took over the island in what's widely seen as a seminal event that reinvigorated tribes to organize in the face of a federal government that steamrolled over their land, their rights and their identities.
Eloy Martinez was among the first group of activists on the island. He says they picked Alcatraz because of its similarities to a reservation.
"It's not sustainable, didn't have any running water, didn't have no toilets," Martinez said.
Many Native American activists today say they're still struggling to have their voices not only heard, but respected.
They cite their ongoing fight against a proposed oil pipeline near the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota that they contend would contaminate water.
US President Donald Trump granted the pipeline a permit early in his term.
