"Basically, the scenario has changed in the sense that in the April elections we were talking about the economy, other topics and Catalonia was in the background."
7. Cutaway of Pascual
8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Ernesto Pascual, Political Science Professor at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB):
"They (PSOE, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) thought that in the situation in which they found themselves (of not forming a government), that they would get more seats (if they had elections again). However, they faced the verdict of the Catalan trial, and this has revived the Catalan independence movement, they found a way to hook again many of those who were unaffected by the process or at least hibernating. The fact that the verdict gave such harsh sentences, not the harshest it could have, but harsh sentences nonetheless, has made independence supporters react again, they were hooked into the movement again and into protests in the streets in a way that I'm sure the Socialist Party did not expect."
9. Cutaway of Pascual
10. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Ernesto Pascual, Political Science Professor at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB):
"What Spaniards worry about the most, according to polls, is unemployment and in seventh place is Catalonia. In front (of Catalonia) there is the topic of politicians, the economy, etc, etc. There are six topics that are more important (for Spaniards) than the seventh, (according to polls) but parties who have certain interests have decided to focus on the seventh (Catalonia) because it is a better topic for campaigning and because maybe they don't have solutions to the other problems (such as slowing economy)."

12. Set up of student Sara Elkaiss
13. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Sara Elkaiss, 18, anthropology student at the Autonomous University of Barcelona:
"It is important to talk about Catalonia, but I think they are giving it too much importance in the sense that they say it is Catalonia against Spain, but it isn't like that, and hasn't been for some time now. Us Catalans have not gone crazy against a government, no. It is the left going against the right. And that is why I think it is so important for Catalonia to vote to the left in the elections on November 10, because if not there will be no solution, there will only be worse solutions (if the right wins)."

18. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Adrian Bataller, 33, contractor:
"In the end, the economy here is making the small entrepreneurs suffer a lot. It doesn't seem like it, but there is less investment coming from abroad, tourism isn't spending that much. This (protests for independence) doesn't please us in the end. And what people see from abroad is just the extreme, they don't see the day to day. Because really this (the violence) which has happened was just four days, but abroad they see it as a war, and this has an impact in the end."

22. SOUNDBITE (Catalan) Maria Roure, 88, retired:
"Well, they (central government in Madrid) don't treat us well, no matter who is in government, whether it is the left or the right. In Catalonia we always lose, always lose."

28. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Tomasa Herreruela, fruit and vegetable seller:
"They didn't want to pact, and I'll tell you something. We shouldn't vote, none of us. With these elections they have done what they wanted. So, it's like this, and we shouldn't vote. They have behaved very badly. We don't have a government, we don't have anything."
29. Street market
30. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Segundo Jimenez, 62, retired construction worker:
"I am going to go and vote, but we are tired of all this mess and misunderstanding between politicians. Now, it's time that they should come to an understanding, so we start going in the direction that really matters: defend the worker and defend Spain."

STORYLINE:
Spain is holding its fourth general election in as many years - and the second this year - amid voter distrust and a renewed Catalan independence bid that has bolstered the far right.
The first obstacle for whoever wins Sunday's vote will be to overcome the country's increasingly fragmented and polarised politics to build a parliamentary majority to back his government.
That could prove difficult. Pedro Sánchez's Socialists appear poised to again win the most seats in Parliament, but by even less than they won in April, when he was unable to get the support of his left-wing rivals to keep his party in power.
"They thought that they would get more seats," explained Ernesto Pascual, a political science professor who teaches at the Open University of Catalonia and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
"However, they faced the verdict of the Catalan trial, and this has revived the Catalan independence movement."
Sánchez is up against five other men for the job as prime minister.
In recent days, he has tried to lure undecided and centrist voters by saying he will toughen his stand on Catalan separatists.
His efforts come as support for the conservative Popular Party and the far-right Vox is growing following massive protests in Catalonia last month, when nine leaders of its separatist movement were sentenced to prison for the wealthy region's attempt to break away two years ago.
In trying to appeal to Spaniards frustrated by the secession attempt, Sánchez has promised to bring back prison terms for those who hold banned referendums for independence, overturning a previous Socialist position.
The party benefiting mostly so far from the Catalan crisis has been Vox, with its mix of Spanish nationalism and populism.
But Pascual warns that the political crisis in Catalonia is overshadowing other topics that may be more important to voters.
"What Spaniards worry about the most according to polls is unemployment, and in seventh place is Catalonia," Pascual explained.
"But parties who have certain interests have decided to focus on the seventh (Catalonia) because it is a better topic for campaigning and because maybe they don't have solutions to the other problems."
Turnout is expected to be low in Sunday's election, something that generally has benefited right-wing parties.
