STORYLINE:
US President Donald Trump cast doub upon the whisteblower behind his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at a rally on Wednesday.
Speaking in the northeastern Louisiana city of Monroe, Trump was hoping to muster votes for Republican businessman Eddie Rispone and keep Democrat John Bel Edwards from a second term.
But the US leader commented on a number of issues, including the ongoing impeachment case and his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
"The whistleblower disappeared. You know who else disappeared? The second whistleblower. And you know who else disappeared? The informer to the whistleblower, if there was such a person, which I doubt, which I doubt," Trump said.
Trump was speaking as Democrats announced Wednesday they will launch public impeachment hearings next week, intending to bring to life weeks of closed-door testimony and lay out a convincing narrative of presidential misconduct by Donald Trump.
