LEADIN:
On November 9, 1989, the 155 kilometre long wall that divided the German capital Berlin was opened.
In the days and weeks that followed, the wall was dismantled, often with crowds cheering on the demolition.
Most of the wall slabs were shredded, but some survived and can be found in surprising places.
STORYLINE:
This is the scene on Potsdamer Platz in central Berlin some 30 years ago.
Mechanical diggers, brought in from the eastern side of the wall, remove the 3.6 metre slabs that had divided the city for 28 years.
One of the first slabs to go is one that has the Nazi Swastika painted together with the communist symbol of the hammer and sickle, a graffitti thought to have been made by visiting Estonians to protest against the Molotov Ribbentrop pact between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
Then a few moments later, the pieces with the word "Blick" is taken down.
People cheer, and the digger continues.
But what happened to those pieces of the wall ?
The answer is an hour drive north of Berlin, in a former sports hall that is now being used as a storage space.
Hans Martin Fleischer bought the pieces in 1990 for approximately 23,000 euros (25,449 US dollars) and has been keeping them in storage ever since.
According to some estimates, around 93 percent of the wall slabs were destroyed after the fall of the wall but a state owned company was set up to sell the pieces that were still intact.
Fleischer's original idea was to resell the pieces quickly and make a profit, there had been some interest from an art gallery in Japan.
But when that deal fell through, he started to get used to being a Berlin Wall owner, the fall of the wall was the "best day of his life."
He was right there when the wall fell, first on the Bornholmer bridge when the first people where allowed to cross in to the west, and on the next day at Brandenburg Gate when people started to hammer at the wall.
"It was the best historical moment over the last 100 years in the world," he says.
"You can even go back longer than that. You can't compare it to the end of the Second Word War, because when it ended in Europe it continued in Japan. So you didn't have the same kind of euphoria. And you can't compare the end of a real war with dead people to the end of the cold war."
In March this year a large piece of the Berlin Wall sold at a UK auction for £15,000 pounds (19, 230 US dollars).
Online some pieces are advertised for a price tag of 50,000 euros (55, 335 US dollars) but it is unclear if any buyer has been willing to pay that price.
Fleischer hopes that his wall pieces can find a permanent home in Berlin, as a part of an exhibition or in a museum.
Preferably close to the original place where they stood on Potsdamer Platz.
He can't put a price on his pieces.
"What can this be worth? This is a historical artefact. You can't really put a price on it, not with money at least," he says.
The Berlin Wall was first constructed in 1961, then as lower brick wall and fencing.
Over the decades it was rebuilt several times.
The final 3.6 metre high structure was built after 1975.
On the eastern side there was a so-called death strip and a second wall.
Some of the slabs were used by industrial companies after 1989.
Here in Teltow, a district south of Berlin, a cement company got several hundred Berlin wall pieces for free from the city of Berlin in 1990.
They used them to create walled squares where different types of gravel were stored.
Some 60 pieces are still standing on the industrial estate.
They share the area with a Christmas tree seller that sets up his stall next to the wall pieces every year.
The cement company was eventually sold to a company called Baustofffirma Klösters.
When Elmar Prost took over as a CEO of the company in 2001, he decided to let artists come and paint the pieces.
If they were sold then the artist and the company would split the profits.
Some pieces sold for between 5,000 and 7,500 euro (5,532 US dollars and 8,299 US dollars), but in the end, most were donated to museums and institutions around the world.
Out of the 200 pieces of the wall that were in the industrial estate in 2001, only 60 remain.
"We donated most of the wall pieces. The first piece we donated was sent to Singapore. We got to know the ambassador and now there are two pieces at the University in Singapore. We have also donated 12 pieces to South Korea, in Seoul and in Uijeongbu," says Prost.
There are pieces of the wall all over the world including Brussels, Las Vegas, London and Cape Town.
But of course, many are also standing in public parks and squares in Berlin - a daily reminder that this city was once two cities.
The artist that has become synonymous with the Berlin wall is Thierry Noir.
The French-born but Berlin-based artist is considered the first person to make a large painting on the Berlin wall, on a section of the wall in the Kreuzberg district in 1984.
He started with different types of paintings, but soon settled on the now iconic large and colourful heads that many people now associate with the wall.
He says it was a way to make the wall more bearable, but it was not possible to make it beautiful.
"Even if you paint kilos and kilos of colours on the Berlin wall, the wall will never, never be beautiful," he says.
Over the years he painted long sections of the wall, but when it was torn down, he lost his big canvas.
But, despite having a career that is closely linked to the Berlin Wall, he doesn't miss the time of a divided city.
"I will never be nostalgic to that time," he says.
"Because it was just awful to live like that. So when the wall came down I was quite happy. I was stuck in a traffic jam at Checkpoint Charlie so I stayed there the whole night celebrating with people. Laughing and crying at the same time."
The 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is celebrated with exhibitions, concerts and remembrance events, culminating with a concert by Brandenburg Gate on November 9.
