SHOTLIST: Bucharest, Romania – 1st December 2019 / Various
1. 00:00 Various of Lokomotiv Moscow and Portugal midfielder Joao Mario before and during the interview with SNTV
2. 00:14 SOUNDBITE (English): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On finding it strange that the English FA sanctioned Bernardo Silva over a 'racist' message to Bernard Mendy)
"It's quite strange because I know Bernardo, you know the guy. So, it doesn't make sense. You need to separate what is a joke and what is racism. I cannot understand if you put them in the same situation, especially because I know the person. So for me it was really, really strange that you put Bernardo and racism in the same bag. It doesn't match."
3. 00:44 SOUNDBITE (English): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On how the Portugal players reassured Silva during the recent international break)
"I was with him in the national team. We tried to talk to him because this is the kind of thing can affect you. If you are accused of something that grave, it's not nice. So we tried to speak to him, just for him to be calm. And to realise that it's not racism, it's about a joke with a friend."
4. 01:10 SOUNDBITE (English): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On how the English FA needed to realise that it was a joke)
"He knows what it is. He knows what his intent was. So for him it was easy to realise that it didn't make such a big problem. But also it's important that for people that can do something – the FA – they realise too what is racism and what is a joke."

9. 02:22 SOUNDBITE (English): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On how football authorities need to start banning or arresting racist fans)
"It happens every day, in Italy, in England, somewhere, you know. Of course, we talk about that but we cannot really do something. It's a kind of frustration because we can protest or not play but it's not going to change. So we can start doing something for sure. We can make an example for the young kids, for the people that really follow us but the people that can really do something are the authorities. They need to ban people, they need to start arresting people. They can really make the difference."
10. 03:02 SOUNDBITE (English): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On how the Italian football authorities must realise they have a big problem with racism)
"It's a really important country. A lot of people love to go to Italy for holiday. A lot of people love football there. It's the kind of country that can really make a difference. So they need to change their mentality for sure. And I think it's a starter if they realise that. Once you realise that there is a problem there they can really change. But at the moment they don't realise it's a big problem, you know."
11. 03:34 SOUNDBITE (Portuguese): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On how racism in football should be tackled)
"Everything starts in (changing) the mentality. If you don't change the mentality the problem becomes more difficult. I think the solution resides in accepting the problem. As soon as the authorities and people that can do something (to solve the problem) accept there is an issue, everything will be easier, but the authorities need to take this problem seriously. We have seen a lot of racism problems and this cannot continue happening. We need to take drastic measures to erase it from football."

16. 04:38 SOUNDBITE (English): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On drawing France and Germany in the 'group of death' for Euro 2020)
"I think everyone thinks the same no? What a group. It's amazing when you can play against these kinds of teams, you know. It's really exciting to play against France, to play against Germany.  Hard teams to beat, you know. But we are the champions of the last European (Championships). We will try our best for sure. We are the kind of team which on a good day we can beat anyone. So we just need to prepare to the max, to be ready for these games."
17. 05:20 SOUNDBITE (Portuguese): Joao Mario, Portugal midfielder:
(On their draw for Euro 2020)
"Of course, we are going to play in the group of death. It is a very difficult group. We are the European champions and we want to defend our title. We also know the road is going to be complicated but if you want to win the Euro you need to start for those games. We are facing very difficult opponents, the last two World Cup winners. We have a lot of respect for them, and for the third team that will be decided by the playoffs, but we have what it is needed."

STORLYINE:
Portugal midfielder Joao Mario has defended his compatriot Bernardo Silva from allegations of racism, telling SNTV it was "strange" that the Manchester City playmaker was punished for a controversial tweet to team-mate Benjamin Mendy.
Mario, currently on loan at Locomotiv Moscow from Serie A leaders Inter Milan, is convinced Silva solely meant the tweet as a "joke with a friend", and revealed he had to console his fellow Portugal midfielder during last month's international break.
Twenty-six-year-old Mario also railed against recent episodes of racism that have tarnished Italian football, appealing to the country's football authorities to take the problem seriously.
"I think the solution resides in accepting the problem," said Mario, adding that "drastic measures" were needed to erase racism from the game.
