"Great to be here in Phoenix and to meet with some voters and hear about some of the issues that are most important to them. Arizona, as you know, is a crucial battleground state but you don't often see presidential candidates around here. And the fact is President Trump is about the only one spending any money here and in some of the other swing states around the country. And that's a big problem for a party and I am determined to change exactly that. Democrats I think have a chance to win Arizona and turn it from red to blue, if we nominate somebody who makes winning here a top priority, and if we nominate someone who builds the kind of broad coalition that is needed to win in states like Arizona. The path to the presidency goes through right where we are standing right now. And this is the road that I'm taking. This is why I'm here and I'm here at the beginning of my campaign rather than later on."

"Well, number one, we should be in charge of our borders, no country is going to go without being in charge of their borders. Number two, this country was built by immigrants and we need an awful lot more immigrants rather than less. We have to go out and actually try to recruit immigrants to come here. We need immigrants to take all the different kinds of jobs that the country needs, improve our culture, our cuisine, our religion, our dialogue, and certainly improve our economy. And I think what Donald Trump has done of ripping kids away from their parents is a disgrace. I think of what we've done where we don't know who we're taking in and we don't help people when they're here is a disgrace. I think talking about deporting 11 million people Is so outrageous it's hard to explain to your kids what that was all about. Our immigration system is broken and we're not doing anything to fix it."

"Well, look, stop and frisk we used for two terms in office. It brought down the murder rate and my whole focus was on reducing the incarceration rate, but also stopping the murder rate, reducing the murder rate and saving lives. And I think what happened during the third term, and looking back, we sort of got carried away and did a lot more than should have. When we discovered that it was ineffective and we weren't getting guns we then started cutting back and before I left office we had cut the number of stop and frisks by 95 percent. And I was asKed about it and it was a mistake. How many times do you hear an elected official say you made a mistake. None of us do everything perfectly. I'm sorry it happened, I can't rewrite history, let's get on with it now."
STORYLINE:
Presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday that the United States needs “an awful lot more immigrants rather than less.”
On his second day campaigning for the Democratic nomination, the former New York City mayor contrasted his views on immigration with President Donald Trump’s restrictive policies and laid out a vision of a multicultural society enriched by immigrants.
“We need immigrants to take all the different kinds of jobs that the country needs - improve our culture, our cuisine, our religion, our dialogue and certainly improve our economy,” the billionaire told reporters at a Mexican restaurant in Phoenix.
He blasted Trump’s policies that resulted in the separation of families arriving on the border.
“Ripping kids away from their parents is a disgrace,” he said.
Bloomberg reiterated his Nov. 17 apology for supporting New York’s stop-and-frisk police strategy, a practice that he embraced as mayor and continued to defend despite its disproportionate impact on people of color.
He said it was a mistake but also credited it with reducing New York’s murder rate.
“How many times do you hear elected officials say, ‘I made a mistake’?” Bloomberg said. “None of us do everything perfectly. I’m sorry it happened, I can't rewrite history. Let's get on with it.”
Bloomberg spoke in the back of a small restaurant in a heavily Latino area a few miles east of downtown Phoenix, the type of community that has helped propel Democrats to success after decades of Republican domination in Arizona.
Latinos organized against a tough 2010 immigration law and against Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration patrols, the latter of which was struck down in the courts for racial profiling.
Arizona has received scant attention form the Democrats running for president, but Bloomberg has put a heavy focus in a state he said will be crucial to the general election.
It’s one of four states where his campaign said it’s pouring 100 million US dollars into anti-Trump digital ads, and one of five where the campaign says it will push to register voters.
