STORYLINE:
The defence lawyer of some of the Israelis accused of gang raping a British teenager in Cyprus has welcomed a ruling by a Cypriot court which on Tuesday handed her a four-month suspended sentence.
The 19-year-old woman was found guilty of public mischief for making up claims that she was raped by up to a dozen Israelis.
"We respect the court's decision. What was important to us was that the woman would be convicted and the version told by the clients I represented would be accepted," said lawyer Nir Yaslovitzh, speaking from Lod in central Israel.
"I will oppose any request for a pardon that will be submitted by the woman's lawyers until she expresses full and honest remorse for the nefarious acts she committed."
Cypriot Judge Michalis Papathanasiou said that he decided to give the woman a "second chance" because she admitted that she made a mistake in making the false rape claim.
He also cited other reasons including her young age, immaturity, personal circumstances, psychological condition and the fact that she had already spent almost month in detention during the six months her trial lasted.
He said that the sentence could be activated if she commits another serious offense within three years.
