నెగ్గిన బోరిస్ ప్రతిపాదన.. డిసెంబర్ 12నే ఎన్నికలు

బ్రిటన్ ప్రధాని బోరిస్ జాన్సన్.. ముందస్తు ఎన్నికల ప్రతిపాదనకు అనూహ్య మద్దతు లభించింది. హౌస్ ఆఫ్ కామన్స్ 438 ఓట్లతో.. 20 ఓట్ల మెజారిటీతో డిసెంబర్ 12న ముందస్తు ఎన్నికలు నిర్వహించడానికి ఆమోదం తెలిపింది. 1923 తరువాత డిసెంబర్లో ఎన్నికలు జరగడం ఇదే మొదటిసారి కావడం గమనార్హం.

నెగ్గిన బోరిస్ ప్రతిపాదన.. డిసెంబర్ 12నే బ్రిటన్ ఎన్నికలు డిసెంబర్ 12న ముందస్తు ఎన్నికలకు వెళ్లాలని బ్రిటన్ ప్రధాని బోరిస్ జాన్సన్ చేసిన ప్రతిపాదనను హౌస్ ఆఫ్ కామన్స్ అంగీకరించింది. ఇప్పటి వరకు ముందస్తు ఎన్నికలను వ్యతిరేకిస్తూ వస్తున్న ఎంపీలు.. అనూహ్యంగా 438 ఓట్లు వేసి 20 ఓట్ల మెజారిటీతో బోరిస్ ప్రతిపాదనను సమర్థించారు.
హౌస్ ఆఫ్ లార్డ్స్ కూడా ఈ చట్టాన్ని ఆమోదిస్తే.. 1923 తరువాత మరలా డిసెంబర్లో ఎన్నికలు నిర్వహించడం ఇదే మొదటిసారి అవుతుంది. అదే జరిగితే ఈ వారాంతానికి చట్టంగా మారనుంది. అపుడు పోలింగ్ రోజు వరకు 5 వారాల పాటు ఎన్నికల ప్రచారం చేసుకునే అవకాశం రాజకీయ పక్షాలకు ఉంటుంది.
బ్రెగ్జిట్ గడువు 2020 జనవరి 31 వరకు పొడిగించిన నేపథ్యంలో.. క్రిస్మస్ కంటే ముందే సార్వత్రిక ఎన్నికలు నిర్వహించాలని ప్రధాని బోరిస్ పట్టుబట్టారు. తాజాగా దీనికి ఎంపీలు కూడా సరే అనడం వల్ల.. బ్రెగ్జిట్ విషయంలో ప్రజాభిప్రాయం పొందటానికి బోరిస్కు మంచి అవకాశం వచ్చింది.

ముందస్తు ఎన్నికల తీర్మానంలో స్వల్పమార్పు చేపట్టాలని లేబర్ పార్టీ కోరింది. డిసెంబర్ 9న ముందస్తు ఎన్నికలు నిర్వహించాలని ప్రతిపాదించింది. ఈ నిర్ణయాన్ని మరికొన్ని విపక్షపార్టీలు సమర్థించాయి. సరైన కాలవ్యవధి ఉన్నందున విశ్వవిద్యాలయ విద్యార్థులు కూడా పోలింగ్లో పాల్గొనే అవకాశం ఉంటుందని పేర్కొన్నాయి.
లేబర్ పార్టీ నాయకుడు జెరెమీ కార్బిన్ తమ పార్టీ.. 'మన దేశం ఇప్పటి వరకు చూడని నిజమైన మార్పు కోసం అత్యంత ప్రతిష్టాత్మకంగా, ఉద్ధృతంగా ప్రచారాన్ని ప్రారంభిస్తుంది' అని అన్నారు.

STORYLINE
Frustration and anger mounted across Northern California on Tuesday as the state's biggest utility, Pacific Gas and Electric, began another round of widespread blackouts aimed at preventing its electrical equipment from sparking wildfires in high winds.
Millions of people have been without power for days as fire crews race to contain two major wind-whipped blazes that have destroyed dozens of homes at both ends of the state: in Sonoma County wine country and in the hills of Los Angeles.
Across Northern California, people worried about charging cellphones and electric vehicles, finding gasoline and cash, and keeping their food from spoiling and staying warm. They donned headlamps at home and parked their cars outside inoperable automatic garage doors.
Some ended up at centers set up by PG and E where people could go to power their electronics and get free water, snacks, flashlights and solar lanterns.
PG and E said Tuesday's blackouts — the third round in a week — would affect about 1.5 million people in 29 counties, including 1 million still without power from a shut-off over the weekend.
PG and E said Monday its power lines may have started two smaller wildfires over the weekend in Lafayette - in a part of the city where the utility had kept the lights on because it was not designated a high fire risk.
One of those wildfires destroyed the clubhouse of the Lafayette Tennis Club, located about 20 miles east of San Francisco,
Other parts of Lafayette and surrounding communities lost power over the weekend. Many remained without electricity Tuesday.
PG and E customer Colin Davis lost wages because the Lafayette grocery store where he works lost power and had to close.
"Everybody's losing money," Davis said. "The companies are losing money. The employees are losing money. And so it's not a good situation for anybody."
Jennifer Challberg, who owns a Halloween store in Lafayette, says she kept her business open without electricity over the weekend, but business was slow when it should have been its busiest time of the year.
"For mom and pop businesses like ours, it definitely is a huge blow to the bottom line," Challberg said.
PG and E, which is in bankruptcy after its equipment was blamed for a string of disastrous fires over the past three years, including a blaze that all but destroyed the town of Paradise and killed 85 people, has said its foremost concern is public safety.
But Gov. Gavin Newsom and top utility regulators have accused the company of mismanaging its power system and failing for decades to make the investments needed to make it more durable. He and others have also complained that the utility has botched the outages by not keeping the public adequately informed.
The California Public Utilities Commission plans to open an investigation that could result in fines against PG and E.
The commission said it also plans to review the rules governing blackouts, will look to prevent utilities from charging customers when the power is off and will convene experts to find grid improvements that might lessen shut-offs next fire season.
