2. SOUNDBITE (English) Gretchen Carlson/Television Journalist - on wanting out of her NDA:
"Well, so on the heels of the NBC announcement, there was a group of women at Fox that we started having discussions about that, you know, let's also ask for the same thing, because it's really through NDAs and through other means of settling these kinds of cases of sexual harassment that we keep women silent. And until we're able to accept as a culture that we're fine with women having a voice and coming forward, we're not going to eradicate this problem."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gretchen Carlson/Television Journalist - on her settlement:
"Actually, my settlement just three years ago was very progressive for the time, in the sense that I received a public apology from 21st Century Fox and nobody was getting apologies and settlements before that time. So, that was great because that was the most important thing to me. I also was given the ability to speak about the harassment issue in order to continue to do advocacy work to help other women. And I have really taken that incredibly seriously and done a tremendous amount of work over the last three years. The way I'm looking at people getting out of their NDAs is just part of the cultural revolution as we continue to move forward. Had I known what we know now, would I have wanted to sign the NDA thinking that I absolutely had to? No. I mean, because we've come so far and so us asking to get out of our end days now is just part of the progression of all of the work that's been done in a short period of time."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Gretchen Carlson/Television Journalist - on wanting to tell her story:
"You know, people can go read my public complaint. My lawyer strategically came up with a way to make my case public or you and I wouldn't even be having this discussion right now. So they were able to put claims in my complaint that you can go and see. So, you know, there are certain things that I don't need to actually talk about in order to continue to do advocacy work but it would be nice to be able to, to be able tell my full story."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Gretchen Carlson/Television Journalist - on why she wants to talk about it:
"I worked at Fox News for 11 years, so you know, the idea that I'm muzzled from really talking about anything during my experience there, there would probably be a lot to say."
(Reporter: "But a lot to say that we all don't already know, because what we know is pretty salacious?")
"But you haven't heard it from me."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Gretchen Carlson/Television Journalist - on the need for companies to let people out of their NDA:
"Well, why wouldn't they do the right thing? You see, if you give – and the onus actually shouldn't be on the women who signed them, because this is how we've decided as a culture to resolve these situations. That's why getting my public apology was so important, because that usually doesn't happen when you come to some sort of an agreement. Some would say that that would be an admission of guilt. So, you know, listen, this is the latest phase in all of the work that I've been doing over the last three years. I had no idea that we'd be to this point, where women would have so much of a voice that they would have the ability now to come back and say, 'We're not going to sign NDAs anymore. And those of us who have, we want to get out of them.'"

"Well, so, I mean, listen, it's amazing to have Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman playing Gretchen Carlson. I mean, that's surreal on its face, but I can't partake in these projects. So, you know, I'm sure that there will be a lot of things that aren't accurate, but I have to look at it from the bigger picture, which is this is going to help women. This is going to give women more courage to come forward, and we're talking about the issue. And so, while personally for me, it could be strange and frustrating, that's really not what it's all about."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Gretchen Carlson/Television Journalist - on input she's had on any of the film and TV projects that are about her:
(Reporter: "What role did you have, if any, did you have in telling your story?")
"Zero - and therein is the frustration and the strangeness of not being able to partake in really big projects that are about something so personal and painful in your life. But I have to look at it, John, to be honest with you, I have to look at it from the big picture, because the idea that these projects are even happening is really, really important because it continues the national dialog about this issue. And if even one woman is helped from watching one of these projects and decides to have the courage to come forward, then these projects are a good idea."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Gretchen Carlson/Television Journalist - on the charges that happened since she came forward:
"The idea that we have come so far with major changes since even my story broke is very optimistic for me as I look at it every single day. For example, women are now believed. Imagine that. When they come forward, they're not automatically maligned like I was. Perpetrators are being held accountable. There are consequences. There are almost immediate apologies. I mean, to think that that much has transformed in just a short period of time is really amazing, and actually, it's in thanks in part to the media."

STORYLINE:
CARLSON WANTS TO REVEAL DETAILS ABOUT HER FOX SETTLEMENT
Gretchen Carlson says when she heard that NBC News was considering letting people out of their non-disclosure agreements involving alleged sexual misconduct at the network, she couldn't help but think of the NDA she signed with Fox News when she left three years ago.
"It would be nice to be able to tell my full story," Carlson said.
She's hoping one day she can. The newswoman says she's asked to be let out of her NDA and talked to other Fox News employees who left with similar settlements about pressing the network to be let out of the agreements.
"Companies are saying that they want to be open and transparent and that they have worked tirelessly to make their work environments safer," she told The Associated Press in an interview on Thursday (31 OCT. 2019). "And if that's the truth, then they should let us out."
Carlson got a reported $20 million settlement in 2016 after she sued the network, claiming late Fox News chief Roger Ailes demoted then fired her when she rejected his sexual advances.
Besides her settlement, she got a public apology, which Carlson said was key: "That usually doesn't happen when you come to some sort of an agreement. Some would say that that would be an admission of guilt."
Carlson's case predated sexual misconduct allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein by a year. One of the scandal's revelations was how Weinstein used NDAs to silence women who accused him of abuse. His downfall led to the #MeToo movement that toppled scores of famous and powerful men.
NBC said anyone interested in being released from their NDA should reach out to the network and it would consider doing so, but Carlson said that didn't go far enough.
Since her departure from Fox, Carlson has become an advocate for women, from writing books like "Be Fierce" to producing and hosting the Lifetime documentary "Breaking the Silence" about sexual harassment earlier this year.
She has also been advocating for legislation that would bar arbitration from being used in sexual harassment cases.
Carlson's allegations have been the basis of two Hollywood projects this year: Showtime's "The Loudest Voice" series, which aired earlier this year, and the upcoming film "Bombshell," with Nicole Kidman starring as Carlson.
Carlson was not involved in either.
"It's amazing to have Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman playing Gretchen Carlson. I mean, that's surreal on its face, but I can't partake in these projects," she said.
And that frustrates Carlson, especially because it's something so personal and painful.
"But I have to look at it from the big picture, because the idea that these projects are even happening is really, really important because it continues the national dialogue about this issue," Carlson said. "And if even one woman is helped from watching one of these projects and decides to have the courage to come forward, then these projects are a good idea," she said.
Carlson said she is amazed at how much progress has happened regarding sexual harassment cases in just three years.
"Women are now believed. Imagine that. When they come forward, they're not automatically maligned like I was. Perpetrators are being held accountable. There are consequences. There are almost immediate apologies. I mean, to think that that much has transformed in just a short period of time is really amazing," she said.
