మిస్టర్ కూల్ క్రికెట్ ప్రస్థానానికి 15 ఏళ్లు

2004లో అనామక క్రికెటర్గా అడుగుపెట్టి అంచెలంచెలుగా నాయకుడి స్థాయికి ఎదిగిన క్రికెటర్ మహేంద్ర సింగ్ ధోని. విధ్వంసకర బ్యాటింగ్, బంతిని దాటి వెళ్లకుండా ఆపగలిగే కీపింగ్ అస్త్రాలయితే.. ఎంత ఒత్తిడిలోనైనా ప్రశాంతంగా ఉంటూ ప్రత్యర్థి ఎత్తులకు పైఎత్తులు వేయగల నేర్పరితనం ఇతడి సొంతం. అందుకే 1983లో తొలిసారి ప్రపంచకప్ గెల్చిన తర్వాత.. 28 ఏళ్లకు మళ్లీ ఇతడి సారథ్యంలోనే భారత్కు కప్పు వచ్చింది. అలాంటి స్టార్ క్రికెటర్ అంతర్జాతీయ క్రికెట్లోకి అడుగుపెట్టి నేటికి 15 ఏళ్లు పూర్తయ్యాయి. ఈ సందర్భంగా అతడి కెరీర్లో కొన్ని విశేషాలు చూద్దాం.

క్రికెట్ ప్రపంచంలో 15 ఏళ్ల ధోని ప్రస్థానం..

మహేంద్ర సింగ్ ధోని

2004 డిసెంబర్ 23న బంగ్లాదేశ్తో జరిగిన వన్డేతో తన క్రికెట్ ప్రస్థానం ప్రారంభించాడు మహేంద్ర సింగ్ ధోని.

ధోని ఆడిన తొలి మ్యాచ్లోనే సున్నా పరుగులకు రనౌటై నిరాశపర్చాడు.
ధోని కెప్టెన్గా ఉన్నప్పుడే అత్యధికంగా ఐసీసీ ట్రోఫీలు భారత్ సొంతం చేసుకుంది.
ఇప్పటివరకు 350 అంతర్జాతీయ వన్డేలు ఆడాడు మిస్టర్ కూల్.

2004లో సౌరభ్ గంగూలీ భారత్కు కెప్టెన్గా వ్యవహరిస్తున్న సమయంలో ధోని అంతర్జాతీయ క్రికెట్లో అరంగ్రేటం చేశాడు. వికెట్ కీపర్గా, బ్యాట్స్మన్గా రాణించాడు.

కెరీర్ ప్రారంభంలో వెనుకంజ

కెరీర్ ప్రారంభంలో ధోని అంతగా రాణించలేకపోయాడు. మైదానంలోకి వెళ్లిన కొద్ది సమయంలోనే అవుటై బయటకు వచ్చేసేవాడు. బంగ్లాదేశ్తో జరిగిన 3 మ్యాచ్ల సిరీస్లో కేవలం 19 పరుగులతోనే సరిపెట్టుకున్నాడు.

పాక్తో సిరీస్ మలుపుతిప్పింది

2005లో పాకిస్థాన్తో జరిగిన సిరీస్లో అసలైన ధోని అభిమానులకు పరిచయమయ్యాడు. విశాఖలో జరిగిన వన్డేలో కెప్టెన్ గంగూలీ ధోనీని మూడో స్థానంలో బ్యాటింగ్కు దిగమని సలహా ఇచ్చాడు. పాక్తో జరిగిన ఈ మ్యాచ్లో ధోని ఏకంగా 123 బంతులకు 148 పరుగులు చేశాడు. అప్పటి నుంచి మహీ తన కెరీర్లో వెనక్కి చూసుకోవాల్సిన అవసరం రాలేదు.

ప్రస్తుతం ధోని క్రికెట్కు దూరంగా ఉంటున్నాడు. ప్రపంచకప్-2019లో సెమీ ఫైనల్ మ్యాచ్ మహీకి చివరిది. వరుసగా సిరీస్లకు దూరంగా ఉంటున్న ఈ ఆటగాడి రిటైర్మెంట్పై పలు ఊహాగానాలు వినిపిస్తున్నాయి. వీటన్నింటిపై ఇప్పటివరకు ధోని ఏం మాట్లాడలేదు. వచ్చే ఏడాది ఐపీఎల్లో కనువిందు చేసే అవకాశముంది. వీలైతే ఆ తర్వాత జరగనున్న టీ20 ప్రపంచకప్లోనూ చోటు దక్కించుకోవచ్చని అభిమానులు ఆశిస్తున్నారు.

STORYLINE:
A Hong Kong seller of luxury wristwatches stands guarded by surveillance cameras to ward off burglars seemingly exploiting policing vacuums caused, in part, by officers sent to riot-control duties.
Hong Kong's 30,000-strong police force has been so stretched by six months of anti-government protests that it is struggling to keep the peace.
Near Causeway Bay, another corner of the city wracked by the unrest, two flats in a luxury residential complex have been broken into. Some say burglars climbed up scaffolding to rob the apartments.
One resident said police are trying to do their jobs, but the safety of the divided city is the most important.
"Hong Kong is divided, so that is the biggest problem," said Conrad, who only gave one name, a resident of the mansion complex.
Police say the proud reputation of the semi-autonomous Chinese territory of 7.5 million people as an Asian haven of tranquility, with crime rates lower than other cities its size, is being eroded.
"We used to be a very safe city, six months ago, but somehow we face a lot of challenges," said Chief Superintendent Kwok Ka-chuen, a spokesperson for the force.
Hong Kong remains a city where visitors need not think twice about venturing out at night. It had six times fewer homicides last year than New York, seven times fewer burglaries and 88 times fewer robberies.
But the mass demonstrations that erupted in June over proposed extradition legislation and then mushroomed into a sustained anti-government movement pushing for full democracy and other demands have burned through police manpower.
Officers have been diverted from crime-prevention, as police fought street battles with hardcore black-clad youths who have hurled petrol bombs and destroyed property.
The latest police figures appear to bear out the suspicions of store owners in Kowloon, where riot squads and demonstrators have repeatedly clashed on canyon-like streets of high rises, that Hong Kong is experiencing a protest-related crime wave.
In the first half of the year, police recorded just 44 robberies, or about one every four days. But the number soared, to 126, closer to one robbery per day, from July to November, as the protests and related violence increasingly stretched the force.
When compared to the same period of 2018, robberies increased by 147%. Burglaries also increased in the past five protest-gripped months, to 1,270, or eight per day, and double the number for the same period of 2018.
