RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY
SHOTLIST:
UK POOL - AP CLIENTS ONLY
UK - 13 December 2019
++DAWN TIME++
1. SOUNDBITE: (English) John McDonnell, Labour Shadow Chancellor:
"(So what went wrong last night Mr McDonnell?) Brexit dominated the whole debate. We couldn't break through on other issues, I think it was Brexit. If you look at what's happened in most of the seats, particularly in the northern seats, the votes shift has been from Labour to the Brexit party rather than the Tories. So yeah, I think we just couldn't get through the Brexit argument basically.
(Reporter's question: And what about Mr Corbyn's leadership, did that play a role?")
"I don't think so, I think that on the policy issues we won the argument, but we couldn't we literally couldn't break through Brexit. We tried our best to have a policy of principle where we would bring the country back together again, both remain and leavers, but that obviously proved to be impossible."
(Reporter's question: "And will you be taking over as interim leader now?)
"No, no, no, no. There'll be further announcements. As Jeremy said, he won't, he said he won't lead the party into the next election. And so therefore will at some stage go into a leadership election, and General and the National Executive Committee will determine that timetable. Jeremy wants to ensure there's a period of reflection and that's what we'll do. We need to examine the details of the result, listen to people, listen to members of the public, what they've said, listen to our own party members and see how therefore we can learn these lessons and build the party and organise for the next election whenever that comes."

2. SOUNDBITE: (English) John McDonnell, Labour Shadow Chancellor:
(Reporter's question: "Is there anyone you particularly think would make a good leader?")
"There's a whole range of the new generation that are coming up and you've seen the, my view is at the moment, I think well, I've said consistently, I think it's time we had a woman as a leader of the Labour Party, so I'm hoping that that's what will happen in the party. But there's a large, the new generation is coming through. They're incredibly talented and yes, very experienced now, they've been in opposition campaigning for quite a bit so, yeah I'm, the future, the party, I know the party (inaudible)  is bleak at the moment but actually, I think we'll learn from this, build upon this and this new generation is incredibly talented."
(Aid, off camera: Thank you very much. Thanks a lot, that will do.")
John McDonnell, Labour Shadow Chancellor:
That's alright one more.
(Reporter's question: So what do you have any particular message to all those Labour activists?)
"Yeah, I just I know they're heartbroken. I know they are so am I. They worked incredibly hard, incredibly dedicated. We have setbacks like this in our movement, but it isn't down to them or any lack of commitment. Brexit was the issue for us in terms of the policy programme we put forward, which they were all participated in developing. I think it's still as relevant today as it was before this election. And for, I think all of us are very heartbroken for the people, not just party members and supporters, but for all the people who are dependent on the transformation, we needed it. All those people queuing up at food banks, all those children who are homeless and living in temporary accommodation or those people on low wages and suffering under universal credit. So, we'll campaign on now. We'll rebuild and head for the future. Thank you. Thanks a lot."
STORYLINE:
The UK Labour party was beaten in the polls by the Brexit debate, the Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said on the morning of the election results.
Speaking in the early hours of Friday, McDonnell said, "Brexit dominated the whole debate. We couldn't break through on other issues, I think it was Brexit."
Britain's election was a flat-out disaster for left-wing Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who faced calls for his resignation.
The shadow chancellor played a prominent role throughout the election campaign, but appears to have ruled himself out as a future leader.
Results pouring in early Friday showed a substantial shift in support to the Conservatives from Labour.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservatives easily won more than 326 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons, ensuring it will form a majority government..
Britain is due to leave the EU by Jan. 31 and talks can then commence over the future trading arrangements. After Brexit, Britain will remain in the EU's tariff-free single market until the end of 2020.
