Silchar: As confusion prevails over the identity of lakhs of 'stateless' people in Assam, several sex workers in Silchar region are attempting to establish their identity after they failed to register their name in the NRC.
According to reports, after the release of NRC list, the workers find it difficult to establish themselves in the society as they are being deprived of basic human rights.
The infamous red-light zone in Silchar, the largest city of South Assam, currently houses around 200 workers who have failed to qualify as Indian citizens.
Hundreds of these workers failed to make the cut after their family members refused to share their legacy data, which is required to establish one's identity under the NRC process.
Besides, many even failed to apply for the NRC process for not having considerable documents to submit.
The question remains how Foreign Tribunals will help them regain their identity in the current situation as they neither have voter identity cards nor Aadhar cards.
The District Legal Service Authority (DSLA) has been pursuing their case and are trying to get them into voter list.
The red-light inmate community has been seeking the help of the state government to overturn their misfortunes caused by the NRC list.
According to the final NRC, out of the total 3.3 crore applicants, 3.11 crore figured in the list and names of about 19 lakh residents were excluded from it. Those who failed to make it to the final NRC list have been given 120 days to appeal against their exclusion at the Foreigners Tribunals.
If not satisfied with the verdict of the tribunals, they will have the option to move the High Court and the Supreme Court for redress.
